We are a unique e-Commerce story, with a social angle, that sets us apart....
We are a South African e-commerce portal selling ethnic apparel, footwear, kitchenware, fashion accessories, beauty products, handcrafted home accessories and other ethnic fashion and lifestyle products. We are headquartered in Pretoria, South Africa. Our promise to our customers is to provide:
We use an online marketplace model by aggregating artisans, designers and retailers from all over South Africa onto a single platform connecting local artisans and designers directly to global customers.
Our model focuses on removing middlemen, increasing the livelihood of local artisans and designers, helping them create/promote their brand, and preserve the South African culture, traditions and values. At present, we charge a 5% commission on each transaction excluding service tax.
Ours is a story of humble beginnings...
Our company was founded by Sharon Rapetswa a serial social entrepreneur, in 2019 with funding from The Tony Elumelu Foundation and Sharon’s Savings. We launched with one employee from Sharon’s Apartment in Pretoria.
"During my years studying business in the United States of America, I was big on online shopping and as part of my community service i was forutnate to volunteer downtown at and African craft shop called The Fabric of Life at downtown Edmonds in Washington. Deep down inside I wanted to go back to South Africa and empower those moms and fathers i grew up meeting that made beautiful crafts by hand and get them to access global markets through e-commerce. When I started Sky Market, I had no e-commerce skills technically but my social background, experiences and lessons learned that taught me the power behind e-commerce combined with handcrafts ,helped me to put all the pieces together to form Sky Market."
Our call to action is to revive handicrafts and make them conveniently accessible globally. We envision a South Africa where hand crafting businesses are sustainable and commercially viable at a global scale.
